$2,553.00

8-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Lemosho Route

The 8-Day Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and least crowded trails, offering an extended itinerary designed for optimal acclimatization. Trek through diverse landscapes—from lush rainforests to alpine deserts—while enjoying stunning panoramic views. With an extra day for acclimatization, this route maximizes your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft), providing a challenging yet rewarding adventure for trekkers seeking the ultimate Kilimanjaro experience.

Day 1: Lemosho Trailhead → Big Tree Camp

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and driven for approximately three hours to Londorossi Gate, where you will complete registration formalities. From there, a short 12-kilometer drive takes you to the Lemosho Trailhead, where your trek officially begins.

The hike starts through a pristine rainforest, teeming with wildlife such as Colobus monkeys, antelopes, and occasionally buffalo or elephants. The trail gently ascends 800 meters over about seven kilometers, allowing you to ease into the mountain while enjoying the lush surroundings. You will spend your first night at Big Tree Camp, a serene campsite shaded by towering conifers, offering the perfect introduction to the beauty and adventure that lies ahead. Meals include lunch and dinner.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp → Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, you continue your ascent as the trail gradually steepens, taking you from the lush rainforest into the unique moors of Kilimanjaro. The hike offers spectacular views of Kibo, the mountain’s summit cone, rising majestically above the plateau. Crossing a steep section brings you to the expansive Shira Plateau, where the terrain becomes gentler and the scenery breathtaking, with wide-open vistas of volcanic landscapes and distant peaks.

You will spend the night at Shira 1 Camp, located on a former volcanic crater, offering panoramic views of the surrounding plateau. The hike covers approximately eight kilometers with an altitude gain of 700 meters, providing a rewarding introduction to Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environments. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp → Shira 2 Camp

After breakfast, the trek continues with a steady climb across the rocky Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic high-altitude landscapes. Along the way, you will be treated to stunning views of Kibo’s glaciers and the dramatic western breach. The terrain gradually becomes more exposed as you approach Shira 2 Camp, where the temperatures drop noticeably at night.

This gentle day, covering approximately seven kilometers with an altitude gain of 340 meters, allows your body to continue adjusting to the higher elevations. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp → Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

The trail ascends through semi-desert and rocky terrain toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation at 4,630 meters. This section is key for acclimatization, as climbers may experience mild effects of altitude. After reaching Lava Tower, the trail descends steeply to the lush Barranco Valley, where Barranco Camp is set beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.

Covering around ten kilometers with a 750-meter ascent to Lava Tower and a subsequent descent to 3,900 meters, this day combines challenging terrain with spectacular scenery. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
The day begins with an exciting scramble up the Barranco Wall, a non-technical but physically demanding climb that tests strength and balance. After the wall, the trail continues beneath the Heim and Kersten Glaciers, offering stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s glacial landscape.

The final section involves a steep ascent to Karanga Camp, which sits at 3,963 meters. Covering 5.5 kilometers with an altitude gain of 250 meters, the day allows trekkers to continue acclimatizing while enjoying dramatic alpine desert scenery. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided at the camp.

Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
From Karanga Camp, the trail climbs steeply through a barren, rocky landscape toward Barafu Camp, the final stop before the summit push. Barafu sits at 4,640 meters, and the ascent covers 3 kilometers with an altitude gain of 677 meters.

The afternoon at camp is reserved for rest, hydration, and careful preparation for summit night. A light dinner is served early, as climbers will wake around midnight to begin the long ascent to the summit. The terrain is stark but offers expansive views, and the high-altitude environment makes pacing and energy management critical.

Day 7: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Millennium Camp
Summit Day begins around midnight, with climbers ascending in freezing temperatures over loose scree toward Stella Point. After 4–5 hours, you reach Stella Point at 5,739 meters, where a breathtaking sunrise over the crater rim rewards the effort. From there, one final push brings you to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, Africa’s highest point, offering a moment to celebrate and take photos.

The descent begins shortly afterward, stopping at Barafu Camp for breakfast and a brief rest before continuing down to Millennium Camp at 3,820 meters. Covering 13.5 kilometers with an altitude gain of 1,255 meters to the summit, then descending to camp, the day can take 12–15 hours. The terrain transitions from arctic conditions near the summit to moorland on the descent, and all meals are provided.

Day 8: Millennium Camp → Mweka Gate
The trek concludes with a gentle descent through lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate, covering 12.5 kilometers and losing 1,620 meters in elevation over approximately 6.5 hours. Along the way, the scenery transitions from moorland to dense tropical vegetation, providing a relaxing end to the climb.

Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, climbers receive their summit certificates and are transferred back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration. Breakfast and lunch are provided on this final day.
